A produção e o uso de produtos químicos são fatores fundamentais para o desenvolvimento econômico de todos os países.

De uma maneira ou de outra os produtos químicos afetam as vidas de todos os seres humanos direta ou indiretamente  por serem essenciais a nossa alimentação (agricultura), saúde (produtos farmacêuticos) e nosso bem estar (eletrodomésticos, combustíveis, etc..).

O primeiro passo para um uso seguro de produtos químicos é saber identificá-lo quanto aos perigos para a saúde, o ambiente, e os meios para seu controle.

Estas informações devem estar acessíveis e organizadas de uma maneira que os perigos e as medidas protetoras possam ser identificados facilmente para o usuário mais leigo.

A classificação de perigo em embalagens é feita através de etiquetas, uma ferramenta essencial para informação sobre o grau de perigo de uma substância química, o que ela representa para o homem, o ambiente, e as ações preventivas para um uso seguro e correto para evitar acidentes.

Hoje não existe um padrão na simbologia de perigo de produtos químicos, apenas a legislação da ONU (Organização das Nações Unidas) que trata de transporte rodoviário é uma padrão nos países membros.

O problema maior é na etiqueta que é colocada na embalagem, onde não existe um padrão nas principais legislações internacionais.

Neste trabalho serão apresentadas  as principais legislações internacionais sobre simbologia de produtos químicos e suas características, para podermos discutir qual seria a melhor para o nosso ambiente laboral, lembrando que já existe algo sobre este assunto em discussão na Fundacentro.
